Where the managing agency has stepped in it has done so well, delivering a replacement fridge on Christmas Eve when the original failed.

Two things need saying plainly before you book with a dog. The communal garden is not enclosed. This is stated on the listing, but it is worth registering, because it means there is nowhere on site to let a dog off the lead safely and a bolter will need to be on the lead from the front door. And the shared grounds are not always cleared up after: guests have complained about dog mess left by other owners, made worse by a robotic mower that spreads it around. If you are travelling with small children as well as a dog, that is the thing to be aware of.

Cleanliness indoors has also drawn complaints, and dogs are part of the reason. More than one guest has reported dog hair left on soft furnishings and around skirting boards from previous stays, and a faint dog smell coming off the furniture when hoovering. That is the honest picture of a well-used pet-friendly let rather than a reason to rule it out, but if anyone in your party reacts to dog hair, this is not the cottage for you.

One practical note from dog owners: the hard floors are slippery underfoot, and owners of older or less sure-footed dogs have found themselves carrying them between rooms. A couple of rugs or a set of paw grips would sort it.
