The Stable at Boskensoe Barns is one of those rare self-catering boltholes that feels genuinely built with dogs in mind rather than merely tolerating them. This four-star barn conversion sits on the edge of a village just outside Falmouth, in south Cornwall, and gives you the run of the whole place - no shared corridors, no reception to negotiate with a nervous dog in tow, just a private, high-spec cottage and your own outdoor space.

The feature dog owners return for is the enclosed dog exercise area - a large, secure paddock where dogs can have a proper off-lead run before or after a day out. On wet Cornish mornings, and there are a few, it turns out to be exactly the amenity that makes a break with a dog relaxing rather than a logistical puzzle. Arriving guests also tend to find thoughtful touches waiting for the dog: a bowl and a few biscuits alongside the welcome tray of Cornish goodies.

As a base, it works for much of the county: Falmouth is a short drive, the dog-friendly Trebah Gardens are only minutes away, and plenty of walks and dog-welcoming pubs sit within easy reach - though be aware some of the best local beaches carry seasonal dog restrictions in high summer. One small practical note: checkout is on the early side at 9.30am.

It suits dog owners after a quiet, high-quality Cornish base with secure outdoor space of their own - couples and small families with one or two dogs will get the most from it.
