Shells Breaks, Tattershall Lakes

Shells Breaks is a privately let caravan on Tattershall Lakes Country Park, a large lakeside resort off Sleaford Road on the edge of Tattershall in south Lincolnshire. It sleeps six across three bedrooms and two bathrooms, sits in one of the quieter parts of the park, and takes dogs as a normal part of the booking rather than as an exception.

No pet charge is published on the property's booking listing, so agree the terms with the owner when you reserve. What guests travelling with dogs do report is a genuinely secure outdoor space, with no gap for a dog to slip through. Step off the pitch, though, and the park's own rule applies: dogs must be tethered at all times anywhere on the site. The caravan also arrives ready for a mixed party: families bringing both a baby and a dog have found the kit for both already there, which saves a car boot full of gear.

The owner is the other reason dog owners rate it. Communication before arrival comes up again and again, questions get answered quickly, and a welcome hamper is left in the caravan for the first evening.

Walking is easy without getting in the car. The park is big enough to circuit on foot with a dog, guests mention wildlife along the way, the Spitfire and Tattershall pub on the park takes dogs and runs a menu for them, and Tattershall village is a short drive for supplies.

Three things to weigh up before booking. The park sits beside an active airfield, and early-morning aircraft noise is the complaint that recurs most, loud enough that light sleepers and noise-sensitive dogs should think hard about it. Access to the park's pools, beach and activities is charged separately from the accommodation, which has caught guests out who assumed it was included. The upholstery and carpets have been reported as needing a deeper clean than they get, which matters more in a caravan where a dog will be on the floor.

It suits families and couples who want a self-catering base with a secure garden and lake walks on the doorstep, and who are not travelling with a dog that panics at aircraft overhead.
