Woodside Lodge, Weybourne

Woodside Lodge sits in Hall Park off Sheringham Road in Weybourne, a quiet North Norfolk village on the coast between Sheringham and Cley, and it is one of the better-set-up self-catering options on this stretch for people travelling with more than one dog. Parties have brought three without difficulty.

The lodge is modern, very clean and comprehensively equipped, down to toiletries, cooking oil and store-cupboard basics, and arrivals are often met with a small welcome shop of bread, milk and a few treats. What dog owners pick out is the terrace: a large private outdoor area attached to the lodge in a secluded plot, so dogs can be outside without being on a lead and without being on show to neighbours.

Guests travelling with dogs have reported that no extra charge was added for them, which is unusual on the Norfolk coast. The property's booking listing does not state a pet fee either way, so it is worth confirming directly when you book, particularly with a larger group of dogs.

Weybourne is a genuinely good base for a walking holiday with a dog. The coast path runs along the shoreline here, the shingle beach at Weybourne Hope is a short walk, and Sheringham, Holt and the heath and woodland behind the village are all within a few minutes' drive.

There are real snags, and they are worth reading before booking. The double bed is creaky and the mattress has dips that guests have had to work around. More seriously for a self-catering stay, showering has been a problem: of the two showers, one has been found completely out of action and the other with a broken fixing. There is also no written guide to the lodge, so working out the heating, the television and the coffee machine has cost arriving guests time they would rather have spent on the beach.

Best suited to couples and families with two or three dogs who want a private, modern base with outdoor space on the North Norfolk coast, and who will ask about the showers before they book. It earns a 4.5/5 paw rating.
