Pet-friendly summary
White Side Cottage sits on a working farm in the hills above Haltwhistle, with Hadrian's Wall a few minutes away by car and walking straight from the door. The layout is upside down, with the living room on the first floor to make the most of the view over the escarpment, and there is a hot tub outside, a free-standing bath, and a ground-floor bedroom and toilet that make it workable for anyone who would rather avoid stairs.
The welcome for dogs is thoughtful in the small ways that matter. Bowls, treats and a towel for muddy paws are put out for arriving pets, and the owner lives next door and sorts anything that is needed quickly. Families find it an easy fit, with lambs in the fields in spring and a good pub a mile or two down the road that rounds off a day on the Wall.
There is one thing every dog owner should weigh before booking, and it comes up repeatedly. The farm has its own Jack Russells and they are not kept apart from guests. The back garden is shared with them, and visitors have found it fouled and usable only while the farm dogs were shut indoors. More seriously, two separate parties describe their own dog being set upon: one had a group of the terriers rush and jump up on the way back from a morning walk, leaving their dog with scratches from a bite and the owner shaken. A confident, sociable dog and an owner content to keep theirs on the lead around the yard will be fine here. A nervous, reactive or very small dog may not be.
