Troodos, Llandudno

Troodos is a small self-catering house on Llwynon Road, up on the lower slopes of the Great Orme, and it is set up for dogs in the way that only an owner-run holiday let tends to be. The garden is fully enclosed, which matters more than almost anything else on a hill this steep, and the welcome pack that greets you includes treats for the dog alongside the ones for the humans.

Guests travelling with dogs return again and again to how clean the house is and how well briefed they were before arrival - there is a detailed information pack, and questions get answered quickly. The house sleeps a family comfortably and has the usual modern comforts, but the pet-friendliness is not an afterthought bolted onto a listing: the enclosed garden, the treats on arrival and the fact that you have the whole place to yourself all point the same way.

Location is the other draw. You are a short walk down into Llandudno for the pier, the promenade and the pubs, with the Great Orme's headland paths starting almost at the door. Wild goats from the Orme wander the road outside and there are sheep grazing behind the back gate, so a dog that cannot be trusted around livestock will need to stay on the lead here. The walk back up the hill from town is genuinely steep, which is worth knowing if your dog is elderly or short-legged.

One thing to budget for: there is a £20 charge per pet, and dog owners have been caught out by it not appearing during booking and only turning up later in the arrival instructions. Factor it in and Troodos is a strong choice for anyone who wants a whole house to themselves, a secure garden and headland walking from the doorstep, and it earns a 4.6/5 paw rating.
