Booking the wrong one is an easy mistake to make and a hard one to fix in season, so confirm which property you are being given before you pay. Up to two dogs are allowed, and registered assistance dogs stay free of charge, though therapy and comfort dogs are not currently treated as assistance dogs here.

There is no secure outside space at either villa. For anyone bringing a dog that cannot be trusted off the lead that is the single biggest limitation, and it is not obvious from the photographs. Dogs also must not be left unattended in the villa or in the car parks, which rules out a full day out without them.

What works well is the format and the setting. Dog owners rate the villa highly for space, cleanliness and the privacy of a detached property rather than a hotel corridor, and Watergate Bay's wide sands are close enough for a morning walk before breakfast. Communication from the owners is usually quick and unobtrusive.

Reviews are not uniformly glowing, though. The weaker ones describe a strong lingering smell in the second bedroom and the kitchen, grubby kitchen windows and blinds, an uncomfortable bed and difficulty getting a reply when guests tried to raise it. That is not the common experience, but it is worth a look round on arrival and a prompt call if anything is off.

Tregurrian Villas suits a dog owner who wants a private, self-catering base a walk from Watergate Bay and whose dog is settled on the lead outdoors. If enclosed outside space is a requirement, look elsewhere on this coast.
