Tree Top Cabin, Dolgellau

Tree Top Cabin is a proper off-grid escape for outdoorsy dog owners, tucked into its own patch of quiet woodland between Barmouth and Dolgellau, at the foot of the Rhinogydd range in southern Snowdonia. Guests travelling with dogs who know what they are booking, a simple cabin in the woods rather than a comfortable cottage, tend to love it.

The appeal for a dog is the setting itself: acres of woods to snuffle through, a babbling stream, birdsong at dawn and a private hot tub to sink into under genuinely dark skies once the dog is worn out. Cabins are spaced well apart, so there is a real sense of having your own corner of the forest. Dogs are warmly welcomed, and Barmouth's beach is only about ten minutes away by car for a proper seaside run.

There is one important thing for dog owners to plan around: there is no enclosed or fenced area around the cabin, and sheep graze the surrounding land, so dogs need to be kept on a lead outside. More than one guest travelling with dogs has wished for a small fenced patch to let them off safely, and others have noted that dogs from neighbouring cabins can occasionally roam, so this is a lead-on, supervise-outdoors kind of place rather than a secure-garden one.

Set expectations on comfort, too. This is a rustic, back-to-nature cabin: a camping-style stove and cool box rather than a full kitchen, limited power, no WiFi, a bumpy access track, and it can be cold in the colder months. It is best suited to a couple travelling with a well-behaved, lead-trained dog who genuinely want to unplug in the woods with a hot tub under the stars, and who are happy to trade home comforts for peace, privacy and a proper taste of the Welsh outdoors.
