Tinners Rest, Pendeen

Tinners Rest sits in the middle of Pendeen, a working village strung along the north coast road of the Land's End peninsula, and its appeal for a dog owner is that almost everything is within walking distance of the front door. The village shop is across the road, there is a pub and a chip shop within a few minutes, and buses stop opposite, which matters when the coast path walk you want to do is a one-way one.

The house is let whole, so there are no shared corridors or lifts to negotiate, and guests travelling with dogs describe it as unusually clean and thoughtfully kitted out. The owner leaves treats out for arriving dogs, and stair gates are kept in the under-stairs cupboard because dogs are asked to stay downstairs. There is an enclosed area at the rear and enough room outside to give a large dog space, along with off-road parking for two cars. Owners of bigger breeds have found the ground floor and the outdoor space workable rather than tight.

Walking is the reason to be here. The coast path is a short stroll away, with the cliffs and old engine houses of the tin coast in both directions, and there are grassy patches near the house for a quick comfort break last thing at night. Dog owners consistently rate the position, calling out how quiet it is after dark and how quickly the rest of West Penwith comes within reach by car.

The caveats are few. Dogs are kept to the ground floor, so a dog used to sleeping beside the bed will need a different arrangement, and the property asks for one well behaved dog rather than a pair. Best suited to a couple or a small family with a single dog who want a clean, well equipped village base and plan to spend their days on the coast path.
