The Ullswater Inn, Glenridding

The Ullswater Inn sits in Glenridding at the southern end of Ullswater, and it goes about as far as a pub with rooms can towards building the operation around dogs. They are welcome in the bar and, less commonly for an inn of this size, in the restaurant too, so nobody has to eat in shifts or carry a plate upstairs. There is a dog menu. Guests bringing dogs describe staff who stop to make a fuss of them rather than steering them past, and more than one long-standing dog owner rates the welcome here above anywhere else they have stayed.

Dogs cost 15 pounds per dog per night, up to two per booking, and the inn asks to be told in advance that one is coming, so flag it when you book rather than on arrival. The rooms are modern and comfortable, breakfast draws consistent praise, and the location is the obvious draw: the lake and Glenridding pier are a short walk away, the Helvellyn routes start from the village, and the shoreline path towards Patterdale makes an easy morning walk.

The frustrations are real and mostly logistical. The car park is small and fills by mid-afternoon, so arriving late can mean paying to park across the road and ferrying bags and dog over, though there is electric-vehicle charging on site at a rate below most public chargers. Rooms have run uncomfortably hot in summer with no practical way to cool them, and one guest lost a night's sleep to it. The building is old and busy, with plenty of stairs and trip hazards, and it fills with families in season, so evenings are loud.

Food quality divides opinion, with breakfast rated far more consistently than dinner, and a few guests have run into maintenance problems and an uneven response to them. The Ullswater Inn earns a 4.3 out of 5 paw rating, held back by the building rather than by the dog welcome, and suits a sociable dog whose owners want it at the table rather than waiting upstairs.
