The Stables, Little Cowarne

The Stables is a cluster of converted farm buildings at Little Cowarne, a scattered hamlet in the quiet Herefordshire country between Bromyard and Hereford. The Tack Room is the unit listed here, a single-storey conversion on a working smallholding, and the setting is what people book it for: open fields, birdsong, and the sort of dark sky at night that makes the drive out worthwhile.

Dogs are welcome across the whole site rather than tolerated in one corner of it, and the owners ask only that they are well mannered and kept under control, which is reasonable given the livestock and the open grounds. There is an enclosed garden on the site, and fenced outdoor space where a dog can potter unwatched is the thing guests with dogs value most. Outdoor space does vary between the cottages, though, and some arrive wishing they had booked a unit with its own garden, so confirm what your particular cottage has before committing.

Two caveats deserve real weight. The first is that nothing is laid on for the dog. There is no bowl, no blanket and no treats, and the welcome touches that turn up in some accounts of the farm are not guaranteed to appear in every cottage, so bring your own kit and treat anything else as a bonus. The second matters more for a rural stay: the walking is harder than the location suggests. Land immediately around the property is largely private, footpaths are poorly signed, and a proper map has not always been enough to piece together a satisfying circuit. A dog-friendly pub within easy reach takes the edge off, and the grounds themselves are pleasant to wander, but do not assume you can step out of the door into open country.

Best suited to people who want a peaceful, low-key base in rural Herefordshire, who are content to drive a short way to walk properly, and who travel with their own dog gear.
