The Honeypot, Chipping Campden

The Honeypot is a small self-catering cottage tucked down an alley off the High Street in Chipping Campden, one of the prettiest market towns in the Cotswolds. You take the whole place to yourselves, so there are no shared corridors or reception areas to steer a dog through, and the alley setting keeps it quiet at night despite being seconds from the middle of the village.

Dogs are welcome by arrangement rather than as a matter of course, and a charge may apply, so agree both with the owners at the point of booking rather than turning up with one. Once that is settled the cottage works well for a short break with a dog: the lounge comfortably takes a small party and a couple of dogs, and there is a fireplace with wood laid on, which is a better prospect than a radiator after a wet walk.

Location is the main event. Chipping Campden's pubs, cafes and shops are on the doorstep, and the town is the northern end of the Cotswold Way, so proper countryside footpaths start within a few minutes' walk, which is what you want for the early and late outings a dog needs. Parking is on the High Street and guests report rarely struggling for a space.

A few honest caveats. It is a compact cottage. The kitchen in particular is tiny, and four adults plus dogs would feel cramped even though the lounge copes. Guests visiting out of season have found the heating limited on chilly nights, worth knowing if your dog feels the cold. The key box also sits low down and unsheltered, which is awkward in the rain when you are managing a lead at the same time.

Best suited to a couple or small family bringing one or two dogs on a walking-focused Cotswolds trip, who want a characterful base in the heart of the village rather than hotel-style extras.
