The Butcher's Flat sits on Main Street in Seahouses, a few minutes from the harbour and the beach, which makes it an easy base for anyone whose holiday revolves around long walks on the Northumberland coast. It is reached by a steep flight of stairs rather than being a cottage with its own garden, and knowing that up front is the key to whether it suits your dog.

The welcome for dogs is the part guests bring up most. Arrivals regularly find dog treats left alongside the tea, coffee and biscuits for their owners, and food and water bowls with mats are kept in the kitchen, so there is no need to pack them. Communication with the hosts is consistently described as quick and helpful, and there is a private parking space at the rear, which saves circling for a space in a village that gets busy in season.

Location does most of the heavy lifting. The beach is around five minutes on foot, and Bamburgh, the dunes and the coastal path north are all a short drive, so the flat works best as somewhere to come back to and dry off rather than somewhere to spend the day. Seahouses itself has plenty of pubs and cafes within walking distance.

Two caveats are worth weighing. Guests do not agree about green space: some point to a lawned area beside the large car park as handy for a quick trip out, while others found nothing suitable close by and had to walk further than expected. The stairs up to the flat are steep, which owners of older or short-legged dogs have flagged as awkward. Early-morning noise is a recurring theme too, from the butcher's downstairs and from the neighbouring flat, though the hosts leave earplugs out.

It earns a 4.4/5 paw rating, and suits confident dogs used to town stays and owners happy to drive to the best walks. If your dog needs grass at the door, or sleeps badly through early-morning activity, a self-contained cottage further out is the safer choice.
