Tannery Cottage, Burford

Tannery Cottage is a small self-catering cottage on Witney Street, a couple of minutes from Burford's steep high street in the Oxfordshire Cotswolds. For dog owners the draw is the enclosed garden - somewhere a dog can be let out off the lead at either end of the day - paired with a position central enough to walk into town, down to the River Windrush and out onto the surrounding footpaths.

Dogs are charged at £25 each, payable at the property. Guests travelling with dogs have been consistently positive about the garden and the setting, describing it as a genuinely easy place to bring one, and the cottage itself as quaint and comfortable, with the beds singled out for praise.

It is a compact cottage, though, and parties have found it tighter than they expected - a group of tall adults in particular will feel the walls. The other caveat is condition: guests have reported a damp, musty smell in the sitting room connected to a roof leak that was under repair during their stay, and felt the price did not match what they got. It is worth asking whether that work has been completed before you book.

Burford is a good dog-walking base, with the Windrush meadows, open countryside just beyond the town and several dog-friendly pubs within easy reach, and having a garden of your own takes the pressure off late-evening trips out. It suits a couple or small family with one or two dogs who want to walk everywhere and do not mind period quirks and a cosy footprint.
