Sycamore Lodge, Brabourne

Sycamore Lodge sits on Moorstock Lane in the countryside between Brabourne and Sellindge, about fifteen minutes from the Channel Tunnel terminal at Folkestone. That location defines the place: a large share of guests are breaking a journey to or from France, and arriving late or leaving very early with a dog in the car is exactly the situation the lodge is set up for.

The garden is the headline. It is genuinely large, running back towards open crop fields with a long view over the North Downs, and dog owners describe their dogs making full use of it after hours cooped up in the car. The accommodation is modern, bright and comfortable, the beds get repeated praise, and there is a welcome pack of drinks and snacks. The owners meet guests on arrival, show them round and send clear directions ahead of time, which counts for a lot when you are arriving in the dark before a morning crossing. An electric-vehicle charger is available on site, and a swimming pool can be booked for an extra hourly charge, which is worth requesting ahead rather than asking on the day.

One caveat matters more than the rest for anyone travelling with a dog, and it cuts against the garden being the main selling point. The grounds have been described as not fenced off from the road, so a dog inclined to wander is better kept on a lead or supervised outside than let out loose. If that would be a deal-breaker, check the current arrangement with the owners before booking.

The other point is space. The lodge is well judged for one or two nights, and larger parties settling in for longer have found it tight.

Best suited to dog owners crossing to or from the Continent who want a comfortable, well-run stop close to the terminal with room for a dog to stretch its legs, provided they are happy to supervise outside.
