Sunrise Studio, Dedham

Sunrise Studio is a compact annexe on the edge of Dedham in Constable country, and it works best as a well-priced, low-fuss overnight base for dog owners who are happy to drive to their walk. The studio is consistently described as spotless, the bed is comfortable, and a proper continental breakfast is left in the fridge, with fresh fruit on the table and a few treats put out for the dog. Check-in is self-service and straightforward, and there is parking directly outside, which matters when you are unloading a dog and bags in the dark.

The honest caveat is the immediate surroundings, and it comes up often enough from dog owners to be the deciding factor for some. There is no garden, so there is nowhere on site to let a dog off the lead, and a road runs past the door. Guests travelling with dogs repeatedly report struggling to find a decent walk on foot; the better ones, along the River Stour, are about five minutes away by car. Several flag this as the one thing they would change, strongly enough that some say it would have changed their booking decision. There has also been a complaint of a lingering dog smell in the room, which suggests the turnaround between pet stays can occasionally fall short.

None of that makes it a poor choice, but it does define who it suits. Dogs are welcome inside the studio and the host is described as relaxed and friendly even when they are noisy, which is not something every self check-in property can say. Dedham village and the Stour valley walks are a very short drive, and Colchester is close enough for a day out.

Best suited to dog owners passing through or visiting the area who will drive to their walks and want somewhere clean, cheap and easy for a night or two. It is a poor fit for anyone expecting to step out of the door onto a dog walk. Sunrise Studio earns a 4.5/5 paw rating.
