This is one of a small group of converted cottages arranged around a courtyard at Hennock, a village on the eastern edge of Dartmoor above the Teign valley, and it is about as well set up for walking with a dog as a self-catering base gets. A gated footpath leads from the property straight onto the moor, so the first walk of the day starts at the door rather than after a drive.
The cottage itself has been recently refurbished and guests are consistently struck by the standard: spacious, tastefully furnished, and equipped well beyond the self-catering norm. Dogs are made welcome without qualification, and the resident owner is described over and over as warm and genuinely hospitable rather than merely efficient.
Hennock is small and quiet, essentially a village pub and not much else, which most guests treat as the point. The pub is within walking distance and has a good reputation for its Sunday roast. Beyond the moorland gate there is a considerable network of paths in every direction, and despite the seclusion the coast and larger towns are around half an hour away by car.
A couple of practical notes. The lanes leading up to the village are narrow, which is worth knowing if you are driving something large or towing. The property is one of several units sharing the same courtyard, so there may well be other guests and other dogs around, which is a plus for some dogs and a consideration for those that would rather not meet any. Soft furnishings are good enough that considerate guests tend to bring blankets to throw over the sofa, which is never a bad habit in a dog-friendly let.
