Rose Cottage, Lazonby

It is a good-sized front garden and it is described as enclosed, but dog owners keep flagging the same two weaknesses: the front wall is low from the garden side with a drop onto the pavement below, and there is a gap in the fencing at the side that a determined dog could use. Several have not been comfortable letting a dog out unsupervised at all, particularly with lorries using the road through the village. Others have found a gate fitted to the side of the property that let two dogs out safely. It is worth asking the owner exactly how the boundary stands at the time of your stay rather than assuming.

Beyond that the reports run consistently good. The cottage is clean and comfortable, the owner communicates well, and the location earns its keep, with the North Pennines, the quieter reaches of the Eden Valley and the northern Lakes all reachable and the station making a car-free day out possible. The occasional grumble covers upstairs heating, road noise, and a cleaning miss between stays.
