Ramsey Sea View Cottage

Ramsey Sea View Cottage is one of four cottages on a working farm at Roch, between Haverfordwest and the St Davids peninsula, and it is the front one, the one with the sea view that guests single out. For dog owners the draw is the secure dog walk on site: a fenced paddock where a dog can run off the lead without you scanning the horizon for sheep.

The cottage itself is consistently described as immaculate, warm and well finished, with quality furnishings and windows looking out over the fields to the sea. You park directly outside your own door, which makes unloading with a dog straightforward, and the owners are quick to answer messages and send clear arrival directions. The sunsets get a mention in almost every review.

Pembrokeshire does the rest. Newgale beach, Solva harbour and St Davids are all close, and the coast path is within easy reach, so this is a stay built around long walks and coming back muddy. One thing to know is that the walk to Newgale on foot is longer than the property's directions suggest, with guests making it a three-mile trek across fields, so drive it if you want the beach rather than the hike.

The significant caveat is the patio. The area immediately outside the cottage is not enclosed, so you cannot leave the doors open for air without a dog getting out. On a hot day that is a genuine problem, and it has been enough to stop guests returning. If your dog needs to potter in and out freely, or struggles in heat, weigh that against the fenced paddock, which is a separate space on the farm rather than an extension of your own doorstep. The duvets have also come in for criticism as hard and unyielding.
