Poppy Cottage is a small stone cottage on Swanage High Street let as a whole house, which is the main reason it works for dogs. There are no shared corridors, no neighbouring room to worry about, and an enclosed courtyard garden at the back that gets the sun and is big enough to let a dog out off the lead. For a dog that settles badly in hotels, having the whole building to itself is worth more than any amenity list.

The position is genuinely good. The seafront at Swanage Bay is roughly a ten-minute walk, the South West Coast Path runs out of town in both directions towards Peveril Point and Durlston, and the road the cottage sits on is quiet enough to make a last walk of the evening easy. Parts of Swanage beach are open to dogs year round, with restrictions on the main stretch through the summer.

The cottage needs some honest caveats, and they matter more than usual when a dog is involved. The staircase is very steep and narrow and several guests have found it hard going, and the downstairs toilet opens off the kitchen and has been described as impractical for anyone with mobility problems. Parking is on-street and often nowhere near the door, so expect to carry bags, dog bedding and food up a hill from wherever you find a space. The shower is small and can flood the bathroom floor, and the kitchen kit shows its age, with worn boards and chipped glassware mentioned more than once. The overall guest score sits at 6.4/10 across a small pool of reviews, well below what the location alone would suggest, and those practical points are why.

Best suited to a couple or small party with one calm, mobile dog who want a self-catering base in the middle of Swanage and will not mind steep stairs and a walk from the car.
