Number Seven Hornsea

Number Seven is a small terraced holiday home on a quiet green in Hornsea, a few minutes' walk from the East Yorkshire town's beach and its freshwater Mere, and it is one of the more thoroughly dog-proofed lets on this stretch of coast. The garden is fully enclosed by six-foot close-board fencing, which is the detail owners of bolters and diggers actually want to know, and there is a summer house out there too.

The welcome extends past the fence. Guests with dogs regularly arrive to find treats put out alongside the human welcome basket and milk in the fridge, and an online guidebook goes out before check-in so the local information is in hand before you set off. A private parking space comes with the house, which matters on a street of terraces.

Inside it reads as a home rather than a rental: a comfortable double, a powerful shower, plenty of space downstairs and a kitchen stocked with what you need. Return visits come up often in the reviews, which is usually the clearest signal that a place works for dogs.

The caveats are minor and structural. There is one bathroom and no downstairs loo, the staircase is steep, and drawer storage in the main bedroom is limited. The front windows look straight onto the green with no nets, so the curtains go across if you want privacy in the evening. Neighbour noise has occasionally carried through, which is the nature of a terrace rather than a fault of the house.

Hornsea suits a dog holiday well: a long beach, a flat promenade, the Mere for a change of scene and the eastern end of the Trans Pennine Trail running inland from the town. With a 4.7/5 paw rating, Number Seven is a strong pick for couples or a small family with one or two dogs who want a secure garden and the sea within walking distance.
