No 1 The Heathers, Liskeard

No 1 The Heathers is a self-catering lodge on a small, quiet holiday park at St Cleer, a few miles north of Liskeard on the southern edge of Bodmin Moor. It is a whole property to yourselves rather than a room in a building, so there are no shared corridors and no lobby to walk a dog through, and it is well equipped for its size, with a stream running behind it. The park is deliberately quiet: a pub open in the evenings and very little else, which is the point for some guests and a letdown for others.

Up to two pets are allowed. The moorland is the real draw for dog owners, and guests travelling with dogs describe long daily walks out onto it - though it is grazed common land, so livestock and a lead go together up there.

The consistent complaint from dog owners is what the park itself provides, and it comes up too often to leave out. The dedicated dog walking area is small, turns boggy in wet weather, and offers nowhere for a dog to run off the lead. Dog waste bins have also been reported as absent, which on a park that presents itself as dog-friendly is a fair thing to be annoyed about - bring your own bags and expect to carry them. Anyone whose dog needs a proper off-lead run before settling for the evening will be getting in the car for it.

The lodge itself draws warm reviews for comfort and equipment, with a minority reporting damp smells and small maintenance faults such as a broken blind or a stiff window. It is also genuinely remote and the address is easy to miss, so check the directions the owners send rather than trusting a postcode alone. For a couple or a small party with a settled dog who want quiet, moorland on the doorstep and the south Cornish coast half an hour away, it works well. For a family wanting things to do on site, or a dog needing a secure field, it does not.
