Nant Gwenyn - Hafan Hideaways Eryri

Nant Gwenyn is a small cabin above Llanymawddwy at the southern end of Eryri, and it is about as good a set-up as a dog could ask for: a fully enclosed garden, a working farm on the other side of the fence, a waterfall in view and mountain walking in every direction. Dog owners describe their dogs settling in within the hour and being distinctly reluctant to get back in the car at the end of the week.

No pet charge is published, so confirm that when you book. In practice the owners are the dog-friendly part. They answer questions about whether the cabin suits a particular dog before the booking is made, send detailed directions a week ahead because there is no phone signal to navigate by, and have turned up with a kettle and tea lights during a power cut and extra kindling when the log store ran low.

The cabin is small and thoroughly thought through: a log burner, a well-equipped kitchen with a twin induction hob, a wood-fired hot tub and a fire pit outside, and a garden with a BBQ and seating. There is effectively no light pollution, so the stargazing is a real draw, and the cabin sits under the Mach Loop, which means low-flying training aircraft overhead on some days.

Three things are worth knowing before you bring a dog. The garden fence is on the low side, fine for most dogs but not for one that will test a boundary. There are sheep in the adjoining field, so a dog with any prey drive needs to be secure and under close control outdoors. And in autumn the tree above the garden drops acorns, which are a problem for a dog that eats whatever it finds. The remoteness is genuine too: phone signal is close to non-existent, so bring what you need rather than planning to nip out for it.

Best suited to a couple with a dog who want somewhere properly quiet, would rather sit in a hot tub under a dark sky than go out for the evening, and are happy keeping a dog on a lead around livestock. It earns a 4.7/5 paw rating.
