Mwsogl, Llanrhystyd

Mwsogl is a self-catering lodge in the Ceredigion hills, set above the Aeron valley between Aberaeron and Llanrhystud with a private fishing lake in its grounds. Dogs are clearly part of the plan here rather than an afterthought: arriving parties are met with a hamper for the dog, and bowls, beds, blankets and towels are already in the lodge, which saves packing half a car boot of kit.

The garden is enclosed, which is what guests travelling with dogs single out most, and the owners keep a written set of local walks in the welcome book with proper route descriptions rather than vague suggestions. Two practical points are worth settling before you book: dogs are not allowed down at the fishing lake, and a small charge for dogs has been reported, so confirm it at the time of booking. Neither is a problem once planned for, but the lake is the centrepiece of the property and it is worth knowing it is off limits.

Inside, the lodge is warm and characterful, with a real fire, underfloor heating in the big dining kitchen and countryside views from the bedrooms. Fresh eggs from the farm are a regular arrival gift. The owners live close by, check in without hovering, and have a good record of sorting problems quickly when something has gone wrong with the property.

The setting is genuinely rural, which is the appeal and also the main caveat. The lane up to the lodge is rough and would be difficult in a low car. The wifi has been unreliable enough that guests gave up on streaming. Aberaeron, Aberystwyth and New Quay are all within a comfortable drive for beaches and food, but you will be driving for anything beyond the lake and the lanes.

Best suited to a family or small group who want an enclosed garden, a quiet rural base and walks from the door, and who are happy to keep the dog away from the water.
