Muriau Park, Caernarfon

Muriau Park is a large country house on the edge of Caernarfon that dog-owning families book when they need to get ten or twelve people and a dog under one roof. It is the kind of place parties return to, several of them on a second or third stay, and the draw is a combination of size, a big south-facing garden, a hot tub and a host who is present and helpful without hovering.

Two well-behaved pets are welcome, and plenty of the groups who stay bring a pair. Dogs come along with large family gatherings here as a matter of routine rather than a special arrangement, and owners consistently point to the outdoor space and the walks as the reason the house works for them. It is roughly a fifteen-minute walk downhill into Caernarfon and its castle and waterfront, with Snowdonia, the North Wales coast and Anglesey all within an easy drive for beaches and hill days.

The garden is where the caution belongs, and it comes from dog owners repeatedly. It is not enclosed and it sits close to a main road. A dog once squeezed through a gap in the boundary and was out overnight before returning; the host secured the area afterwards, but the lesson stands, and dogs should not be left loose out there. Others describe the garden as usable only with someone standing outside while the dog is out. The host also keeps her own dog and cats on the property, which suits some dogs and not others, so it is worth knowing before you arrive.

Two other things are worth going in with. Guests have reported a leather sofa smelling strongly of wet dog, with a fair point attached: a house that takes pets needs a deeper clean between stays, and owners need to keep dogs off the furniture. Separately, a stay ran into damp from a roof leak in two bedrooms, along with construction traffic and works overlooking the garden that made the outdoor space unusable that week. Neither is the usual picture here, but both are worth asking about before a big booking.

It earns a 4.8/5 paw rating. Best suited to a large family or group of friends with one or two steady dogs who will use the garden under supervision, and who want space, a hot tub and Snowdonia on the doorstep more than a manicured lawn.
