Lucy's at the Grange is a single-storey bungalow above Loweswater, in the quiet western corner of the Lake District, and the layout is what makes it work for dogs. Everything is on one level, so there are no stairs to manage with an older or arthritic dog, and the garden is enclosed. Guests with dogs mention that first and most often, because it means letting them out safely rather than getting dressed for a late-night lead walk. The bungalow earns a 4.4/5 paw rating.
The setting does the rest. Public footpaths start at the door, the lake is a few minutes' walk away, and the fells fill the view from the patio and the open-plan living room. Buttermere and Keswick are within easy reach for a bigger day out. Inside there is room for a large party, with a well-equipped kitchen, comfortable beds and good sound insulation between the bedrooms.
Two caveats. Housekeeping draws the most criticism: guests have reported cobwebs, damp patches and a general need for a tidy-up around the outside of the bungalow, and more than one has linked the standard of cleaning to the property taking dogs. Nothing suggests dogs are unwelcome, but a fussy guest will notice.
The other is remoteness. There are no shops nearby, the closest pub is a couple of miles off and Cockermouth is about five miles away along narrow winding lanes that take longer than the distance suggests and feel slower again after dark. That is the price of the quiet.
Best suited to a group or extended family with dogs who want a secure garden, single-level access and fell walking straight from the door, and who are happy to drive for everything else.
