Lower West Curry Cottage

Lower West Curry Cottage sits on a small working farm in the lanes north of Launceston, and it takes dogs seriously enough to accept up to four on a booking, which is rare. The garden is enclosed and looks out over fields to the sheep and pigs beyond, there is a stair gate already fitted, stone floors run through the ground floor, and the downstairs utility and toilet double as somewhere to towel off a wet dog. Bowls, towels and treats are put out for arrivals.

The hosts live on the farm and are a large part of why people rebook. The welcome pack has become something of a legend in the reviews: homemade bread and scones with clotted cream and jam, eggs from the hens, butter, milk, wine and flowers on the table, with home-cooked meals available if you would rather not drive out. Guests are usually offered a walk round the farm to meet the lambs, piglets and rare-breed animals. There is undercover parking and a car charger shared with the neighbouring let.

The one caveat that comes up repeatedly is the garden boundary. The outdoor space is divided from the neighbouring cottage's garden by a fence of around four feet that is neither solid nor gap-free, so dogs on either side can see and reach each other, and one party had the neighbours' dogs come over it. If your dog is reactive, or simply would rather not have company, ask about the layout before booking. An internal connecting door to the larger cottage next door also lets noise through when that one is busy.

A few smaller things. This is a working farm, so expect early animal noise and farmyard smells; most guests count that as part of the appeal. The stairs are steep and one party found them hard going for an elderly dog, and opinions on the mattress are genuinely split. There are few footpaths directly from the door, so most walks start with a short drive: Widemouth Bay is around twenty minutes, with dogs allowed on the south beach all year round, and Bude's beaches and the coast path are close behind. For a multi-dog party wanting space, views and a proper farm setting, it earns 4.8 out of 5.
