Lilac Cottage sits in quiet countryside a few minutes from Strathpeffer, and its big draw for dog owners is the garden: a genuinely large, fully enclosed space that regulars say the photographs undersell, with a higher fence added in recent years. Dogs can be let out without a second thought, and plenty of parties bring two or three. Up to two pets are allowed on a booking.
The cottage itself is warm and practical for a wet-weather holiday. There is a wood-burning stove, a drying room that guests single out as the most useful thing in the house after a day in the hills, and a welcome basket that usually includes chews or treats for the dog. The owner is local, easy to reach and unobtrusive.
The walking is good and starts close by. A track directly across the road leads to a sawmill and on through woodland, and a river walk climbs into the hills. Strathpeffer, with its shops and cafes, is a few minutes away, Dingwall and its supermarket about ten, and the cottage makes a workable base for the North Coast 500, Inverness, Loch Ness and Ullapool.
Two honest caveats. The road immediately outside is a 30mph stretch that traffic coming down the hill regularly ignores, which is worth bearing in mind between the parking and the gate. And housekeeping has been the weak point: separate parties have reported pet hair behind the sofa cushions, a stale dog smell in one bedroom and from the vacuum cleaner, and on one occasion dog waste left in the garden by earlier guests. Others have arrived to a spotless cottage, so it varies, but it comes up often enough to mention. A worn double mattress and grass left long in the big garden have also drawn comment, as has an outside light that was out of action and made night-time garden trips awkward.
One last thing that is not the cottage's fault but matters when you are planning: guests have found the pubs and restaurants in the nearest village unwilling to take dogs, so expect to eat in or drive. For a party who want space, a secure garden and Highland walking close at hand, Lilac Cottage still earns 4.7 out of 5.
