Kestrel Cottage, Silsden

Kestrel Cottage sits high above Silsden on the western edge of the Yorkshire Dales, and it is the kind of small, owner-run holiday let that clearly has dogs in mind rather than merely tolerating them. It is a one-dog property, and the detail that comes up again and again from guests travelling with pets is the enclosed garden: fully fenced, with fresh running water in it, so a dog can be let out last thing at night without anyone reaching for a lead.

Walks start at the door. The cottage is set among hills and open fields, and dog owners consistently describe heading straight out from the gate rather than driving anywhere first. Guests also have use of a large grassed area at the front of the property. For longer days out, Skipton, Bolton Abbey, Grassington, Settle and Ilkley are all within an easy drive, and the surrounding Dales footpaths are the main draw.

The owners do a lot of the work here. Guests arriving with dogs mention a genuinely warm welcome, home baking left out on arrival, and a cottage stocked down to the toilet roll and the washing-up liquid, which matters more than it sounds when you have arrived late with a wet dog. The building is well insulated and warm, with underfloor heating and a log burner, so muddy paws and a soaked coat are not a problem.

A few things to know. This is a single-dog let, so anyone travelling with more than one will need to look elsewhere. The approach lane is narrow and can be overgrown, the wi-fi is unreliable, and some guests have found the beds firmer than they would like. None of that is pet-specific, and dog owners rate the cottage highly regardless.

Best suited to a couple or small family with one well-behaved dog who want hill walks from the doorstep and a properly secure garden to come back to.
