Hillhaven Lodge is a cabin on the Black Isle just outside Fortrose, and it is one of the better-suited places in the Highlands for anyone travelling with a big dog or more than one. The garden is the reason: large, fully secured, and giving dogs room to actually run rather than just be let out. Guests have brought large breeds here, a cane corso among them, and found the space handled them easily. It earns a 4.7 out of 5 paw rating.
The lodge is set up for slow days. There is a log burner with plenty of wood provided, a hot tub, a telescope trained on the highland cattle in the neighbouring field, and the small provisions - tea, coffee, ice in the freezer - that make a self-catering arrival painless. The owners live close by and are, by every account, attentive without being intrusive, ringing ahead before coming to service the hot tub rather than simply turning up.
Two things to plan for. There is a resident cat on the property, which is lovely if your dog is relaxed around cats and a problem if it is not, so raise it when you book. And the access is genuinely easy to miss: the turning is before the pedestrian crossing at the village shop rather than after it, and more than one arrival has ended in a phone call and an escort down.
The setting does the rest. The Fairy Glen waterfall trail is a short drive and makes a proper walk, there are beaches within reach on both coasts of the Black Isle, and the village has a supermarket, a bakery, a pub and cafes a few minutes away. A car is essential; this is not a walk-to-the-shops sort of base.
It suits owners of large or multiple dogs who want space, quiet and a hot tub at the end of the day, and who do not mind driving for supplies.
