Hendoll Barn, Fairbourne

Hendoll Barn is a carefully restored barn conversion in the hills above Fairbourne on the Gwynedd coast, at the southern edge of Eryri (Snowdonia), and it sits in walkers' and dog owners' country in every direction. The whole barn is yours, up to two dogs are welcome per booking, and the tiled and wood floors throughout make it a practical place to come back to with muddy paws.

The walking is what owners return for. A track from the door climbs to the old slate quarry and its blue lagoon, with views over the coast; Fairbourne and its beach are fifteen to twenty minutes on foot, and the Mawddach estuary, Barmouth and Cadair Idris are all close by. Owners also note that the beach at Barmouth takes dogs outside the summer restrictions, which makes the barn a strong out-of-season base.

One caveat matters more than any other here, and it comes up repeatedly from guests who brought dogs: the garden is not enclosed, and there is no gate between the grounds and the road. Dogs go out on the lead every time, and anyone whose dog cannot be trusted near traffic should weigh that carefully, because for some owners it has been reason enough to say they would not recommend the barn for a dog at all. The patio and the outlook are a real draw, but they are not somewhere to let a dog roam.

Inside, the conversion draws consistent praise for its quality, comfort and space, with a well-equipped kitchen and beds that owners mention often. Housekeeping is the weaker link: accounts range from spotless to a stay that needed a deep clean, with fusty towels and dust noted more than once, and no vacuum cleaner on site for a longer let.
