Hares Haven, Patrington

Hares Haven is a self-catering lodge on a quiet holiday park at Patrington Haven, in the Holderness corner of East Yorkshire. Spurn Head, the wide Holderness beaches and the wetlands around Kilnsea are all a short drive away, so there is a lot of long, open walking within reach of the door. You take the whole lodge to yourselves, with two en-suite shower rooms and room for six, and no shared corridors or communal lounges to steer a dog through.

The thing dog-owning guests return to again and again is the enclosed garden. They describe it as secure and easy to relax in, with wrap-around decking and outdoor seating that catches the sun, giving dogs somewhere to potter off-lead while everyone else settles in. Guests also mention an enclosed dog field on the park itself for a proper run. The hosts lean into the pet-friendly side: visitors regularly arrive to a welcome pack with treats for the dog and a box of toys to borrow, and the generous freezer draws particular thanks from anyone feeding a raw diet.

Inside, the lodge is spotlessly clean, warm and thoroughly equipped, with a washing machine and dishwasher that earn their keep after a muddy beach day. Guests travelling with dogs routinely bring children and grandchildren along, and report both settling in happily.

A couple of honest caveats. When the neighbouring pitch is empty, keener dogs will test the garden boundary, so the more determined escapologists need watching. On-site club and dining facilities have been closed at points following an earlier fire, so plan meals around the lodge's kitchen and the nearby villages, and note that the larger supermarkets are a fair drive off. The park itself stays calm, and dog-owning guests describe fellow residents as friendly out on the walking paths.

Best suited to families and couples who want a clean, well-kept base with a genuinely secure garden and quick access to the Yorkshire coast for their dog, rather than resort-style on-site entertainment.
