Harbottle Lodge, Longframlington

Harbottle Lodge is a timber cabin on a small holiday park near Longframlington in inland Northumberland, and what it sells is quiet. There are only around fourteen cabins on the site, it is emphatically not a party place, and the surrounding country is dark enough at night to make stargazing a reason to book in itself. For a dog that likes a settled week with long walks and no fuss, it is a good fit.

Up to two pets are allowed. The cabin is warm and comfortable inside, with a clean kitchen, a decent shower and a comfortable bed, and there is a circular footpath from the park that makes an easy daily walk, though it crosses fields with cattle in them, so a dog that chases is best kept on a lead. The wider location is the real strength: Rothbury and the riverside walk along the Coquet are close, and the Northumberland coast at Alnmouth, Embleton and Bamburgh is within a comfortable drive.

It is worth being realistic about the site and the standard, because guests consistently are. The park itself is tired rather than pretty, and the drive in has potholes. Cleanliness is the recurring complaint: dust and dirt behind and under the sofa, dirty windows and frames, cobwebs, unswept decking and a grubby outdoor table have all come up, and a stained mattress protector has been found on a made-up bed. Several guests describe the cabin as needing a proper deep clean rather than a quick turnaround, which grates all the more when a dog's toy rolls under the sofa and comes back out with the dirt on it.

The other gap is an odd one for a lodge that markets itself to dog owners: no information is provided about walks from the park or in the surrounding area, so guests routinely spend half the week working out where to go. Downloading routes before arrival is a sensible precaution. There is no washing machine in the cabin either, and the shared one on site is expensive and not well regarded, which matters when a wet dog and a week of walking are involved.

The 4.1/5 paw rating reflects that split: a genuinely peaceful, well-placed and dog-tolerant base, let down by housekeeping and a lack of basic information. It suits owners who care more about where they can walk than what the accommodation looks like, and who will not be thrown by having to clean around the edges on arrival.
