Gooder House is a large self-catering house on Above Town in Dartmouth, and it is one of those rentals that has clearly been thought about with dogs in mind rather than merely tolerating them. The detail guests with dogs mention most is a side door that lets you bring a dog straight into the tiled kitchen and dining area, so a wet or sandy dog coming back from the river or the coast never has to cross carpet to get there.
Space is the other draw. Parties of five or six adults with two Labradors report room to spare, which is unusual - most dog-friendly rentals in Dartmouth are couple-sized. There is also a garage, which matters more than it sounds in a town where parking is genuinely difficult, and it takes a mid-sized estate or 4x4 with a few inches to spare. The approach is worth planning. The lanes up to Above Town are narrow, and returning guests advise coming at it from the Crowther Hill end, with a turning area a short distance beyond the house.
