Forestbrook, Longtown

Forestbrook is a two-bedroom lodge on a small holiday park just outside Longtown in north Cumbria, and its appeal to dog owners is simple and practical: there is a dedicated dog-walking field on the site, and the plot itself is fenced with a gate, so a dog can go out of the door without a lead in hand. For anyone breaking a long drive to or from Scotland, that combination is hard to beat.

The position does a lot of the work. Longtown is five minutes away, Carlisle and Gretna about fifteen in either direction, and the main routes north are close without the traffic being audible. Guests use it as an overnight stop far more often than a week's holiday, and the reviews reflect that: dogs arrive tired from the car, get a run in the field, and everyone sleeps. The lodge itself is well equipped for the price, with a proper kitchen, comfortable beds and enough space for a family of four.

Housekeeping is where the picture gets uneven, and it matters more with a dog in the party. Most guests describe the lodge as spotless on arrival. A minority have not: complaints have covered a greasy oven, marked carpets, and bedding that had not been changed between stays with a previous guest's dog hair still in it. The house rules ask that dogs stay off the beds and furniture, which is reasonable enough, but sits awkwardly against that experience. If cleanliness on arrival is the thing that would ruin a stay for you, photograph anything you find and raise it straight away.

A few smaller gaps are worth packing around. There are no bins on the site for dog waste and no recycling, so you will be carrying bags out with you, and there is no vacuum in the lodge if you like to tidy up after your dog before leaving. There is no welcome pack, and the wifi is slow. With a 4.3/5 paw rating, Forestbrook is a good, well-priced stopover for a dog that likes a field and an owner who checks the bed on arrival.
