Fir Tree Stables is a single-storey one-bedroom cottage on a hillside above Nidderdale, a few miles from Pateley Bridge and within reach of Brimham Rocks and Fountains Abbey. Walking is the real draw: footpaths run from near the door, the moorland around Brimham Rocks suits a leisurely hour rather than a route march, and the surrounding villages have a good run of dog-friendly pubs and cafes. The hillside position is also far enough from anywhere that the cottage has become a repeat choice for guests trying to get a noise-sensitive dog away from bonfire night, who report fireworks were barely audible.

The thing to plan around is the boundary. There is no gate between the cottage and the field wall, so the outdoor space is open rather than enclosed, and guests have described a small dog slipping past them and heading off across the land before being retrieved. A dog that will not stay put needs a lead for last-thing-at-night trips. The same land carries a small adults-only certificated caravan site of up to five vans, set far enough away that reviewers say it does not affect the stay, and there are cattle in the neighbouring fields, so leads near stock are sensible. Guests hoping for waymarked dog walks straight from the door have sometimes struggled to find them and ended up on the lane instead.
