Cherry Fields is a large single-storey bungalow on the edge of Bolsover in north-east Derbyshire, let by owners who live next door and who clearly like dogs. Everything is on one level, which suits an older dog as much as an older guest, and the wet room and step-free layout make it one of the easier properties to manage if someone in the party has mobility needs.
The draw for dog owners is space and animals. There is a big rear garden, and the owners let guests walk dogs up the shared drive and onto the top field behind the property. Resident chickens, ducks and a turkey called George live on site, and guests with dogs consistently describe their dogs being more interested in the poultry than in anything else all week. Arrivals are met with a welcome pack that usually includes fresh eggs from the birds.
One thing needs saying plainly, because it comes up in review after review: the garden is not secure. It is large and pleasant, but it is not dog-proof and the patio area is open, so a dog that bolts or wanders cannot simply be let out unsupervised, and some guests have found the gate to the back field locked. If you rely on an enclosed garden, this is the wrong property. If your dog has decent recall and you are happy on a lead, it is a good one. Carr Vale nature reserve is a short drive for a longer walk, and the town, the Co-op and the castle are within walking distance.
The other honest caveats are cosmetic and occasional. The decor and furniture are dated, and while most guests find that homely, some have found the lounge gloomy. There have also been stays that fell below the usual standard, including a garden left with dog mess that had not been cleared, so it is worth a look round the outside space on arrival.
Best suited to guests who want a spacious, step-free base near the Peak District fringe and Sherwood Forest, and whose dogs are happy on a lead. It earns a 4.4/5 paw rating.
