Bell Rock Cottage

Bell Rock Cottage is a whole-house let at Balmashie, a few minutes' drive south of St Andrews, and its selling point for anyone travelling with a dog is unusually simple: the garden. Guests travelling with dogs mention it more or less without exception. It is large, it is fully enclosed, and it looks out over the Fairmont golf courses towards the sea, which means a dog can be let out safely at any hour without a lead or a walk. Parties with two dogs and with older, slower dogs both report the same thing.

Dogs are welcome throughout the house and the property is set up for self-catering, so there are no shared spaces to negotiate. Beyond the garden, the Fife Coastal Path is within walking distance and there is easy access onto the golf course paths for longer outings. St Andrews itself is about five minutes by car, and guests note that taxis have no trouble finding the address, which matters if you want an evening in town without moving the car.

The caveat is housekeeping, and it is worth taking seriously. Guests with dogs have arrived to find rugs visibly dirty, hair left over from an earlier stay, and grass clippings walked in from the lawn after mowing. Others report mould in the shower tray and a bin missing its liner. The fabric of the place draws similar comment: a dated kitchen and cooker, a television most people find too small, and mattresses that several guests found uncomfortable. A trailing radiator cable running out into the hallway has also been flagged as a hazard, which is worth a look on arrival if you have a chewer.

None of that outweighs what the cottage does well, and it earns a 4.6/5 paw rating on the strength of the outdoor space. It is a good fit for dog owners who want a secure garden, coastal walking and a base near St Andrews, and less good for anyone expecting hotel-standard turnaround between stays.
