Beach Court, Saundersfoot

Beach Court is a ground-floor apartment on the Strand at Saundersfoot, facing the beach, and its most practical feature for a dog is the flooring: hard floors throughout, so sand, salt water and wet paws wipe up rather than soak in. The harbour, the pubs and the shops are all a short walk away, and the town has plenty of places that welcome dogs at the table.

A charge applies for a dog, though the amount is not published, so agree it with the owner when you book. Dogs of any size are welcome, and cats are accepted as well as dogs, which is unusual in a seaside let of this size.

The apartment itself is modern and bright after a recent refit, with a well-equipped kitchen, strong water pressure and underfloor heating in the bathroom, plus an off-road parking space, which counts for a lot in Saundersfoot in season.

Two caveats matter more here than at most seaside lets. The first is toileting: there is nowhere green immediately by the apartment, and Pembrokeshire's resort beaches carry seasonal dog restrictions between May and September, so a high-summer trip needs planning around where the dog actually goes. The second is cleanliness, which comes up often enough to mention: grit left on the hard floors, dog hair on the cushions, and dishes and tea towels that needed washing before use. The parking space is tight, and the bedroom blind does not block a bright external light at night.

Out of season, with a dog who is happy on a lead and a short drive to open ground, this is a well-placed and comfortable base, and it earns a 4.0/5 paw rating. In July and August, with a dog that needs grass, it is worth looking further out of the town.
