This cosy self-catering annexe sits near Chirk on the edge of the Dee Valley in north Wales, within easy reach of Llangollen and right by the spectacular Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. It is a well-placed, dog-friendly base for walking country, and guests travelling with dogs generally rate it highly.

The apartment is set up for dogs, with a secure garden and superb walks from close by, and the hosts are friendly but hands-off, which many guests appreciate. One thing genuinely worth knowing: there is a much-loved resident dog on site, a collie, who is often about and sometimes off-lead. Sociable dogs tend to get on fine and enjoy the company, but a guest with a reactive dog found the loose dog tricky to manage, so if yours does not do well meeting other dogs unexpectedly, raise it with the host before you book.

Inside, the annexe is compact but comfortable, spotlessly clean and well equipped, a proper home-from-home with thoughtful touches like towels and toilet roll provided. It can be a little tricky to find, but a quick call to the host sorts it out, and the internet can be slow if you are relying on the TV.

The location is the real draw. The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, Ty Mawr Country Park and canal towpaths are all close by for excellent dog walks, and Llangollen and the wider Dee Valley are an easy trip out.
