4 Water's Edge is a lodge on a small lakeside park at Lanreath, in the quiet countryside behind Looe. It looks straight out over the water, has a hot tub on the decking and enough room inside for a family, and the setting does most of the work: green, still, and a short drive from both the south Cornwall coast and the woods inland. There is a restaurant on site, though it closes a couple of days a week.
Up to two dogs can stay. The decked terrace is enclosed, so a dog can be outside with you without a lead, and there are walks around the lake and the lanes from the park itself. Cardinham Woods, about twenty minutes away by car, is the one dog owners recommend for a proper long walk. The lodge takes pets in its stride, with a dishwasher and washing machine that earn their keep after a muddy day.
Two things are worth knowing before you book. The terrace is fenced with wire rather than glass, and the gaps are wide enough that owners of small dogs have found it no use at all for containing them; if your dog is little or a determined escaper, treat the terrace as a place to sit rather than a secure pen. And the park is very dimly lit after dark, which makes the last walk of the day harder than it should be, so pack a torch.
As with a lot of lets that welcome pets, the cleaning does not always keep pace: one party arrived to noticeable dog hair on the floors and sofas. The hot-tub team calls daily at any point between mid-morning and late afternoon, which some guests found intrusive, and the lane in is narrow with blind corners.
Best suited to families or couples with one or two medium-sized dogs who want a lakeside base for exploring south-east Cornwall. It earns a 4.6/5 paw rating.
