It is a self-contained apartment rather than a serviced hotel, so there are no shared corridors or lifts to negotiate with a lead in hand, and the door opens onto a quiet residential road.

The property takes up to two pets per booking. Outside space needs a little thought: the rear patio is enclosed, but the front lawn is open to the road, so a dog inclined to wander is better kept to the back or on a lead at the front. No pet supplement is published, which is not the same as there being none, so it is worth asking when you book.

Where the apartment earns its standing with dog owners is the welcome itself. Dog treats are left out for arriving pets, and the place is described as modern, clean and stocked with the practical bits that make a self-catering week easier. That kind of small, deliberate touch tends to mark a host who has thought about four-legged guests rather than merely tolerating them.

One caveat belongs on the record. A guest travelling without a dog reported a faint pet smell in the apartment. Nobody arriving with a dog raised it, and in a property that regularly hosts pets some residual odour is unsurprising, but anyone sensitive to it should know in advance.

The other thing to prepare for is the gradient. Salcombe is built on a hill and Camperdown Road is no exception, so the return leg up from the harbour is a real climb. Fit dogs will not mind it; older or short-legged ones, and anyone managing a buggy as well as a lead, should factor it in.

Best suited to a couple or a small family with one or two dogs who want a clean, central Salcombe base and are happy to walk hills to reach the beach.
